Bird Outings & Events

Come birding with us. We head out to marshes, parks, preserves, and the occasional coastline, led by volunteers who are happy to point out the bird you just missed. And we turn up at community events, too.

Everyone's welcome, whether it's your first outing or your four hundredth.

Getting there
Many trips leave from Memorial Park in Claremont (opens in a new tab). Carpool if you like, or meet us there. Driving miles are round trip from the park.

Coming up

Bird walks, day trips, the odd weekend away, and community events where you'll find us at a booth, usually with an owl nearby.

Every month, like clockwork

Two walks happen most months of the year. They're the easiest way to try a trip with us.

First Sunday of the month · September to June

Family-friendly bird walk at California Botanic Garden

Easy

About two hours, and just right for beginners and seasoned birders alike. No binoculars? We have loaners (first come, first served), and we'll show you how to use them.

The garden asks everyone to register ahead each month. You'll find the link on that month's trip under Coming up.

Once a month · September to May

Bonelli bird outing

Moderate

One of the richest birding spots in Southern California. Meet at 7:45am in the Norm's Hangar Coffee Shop lot at Brackett Field, 1615 McKinley Ave, La Verne, and we'll caravan into the park for free entrance. The walk starts at 8am and runs two to three hours.

Dates change month to month, so check Coming up for the next one.

How hard is it?

Every trip gets one of four ratings, so you know what you're signing up for. Easy through Strenuous all mean a few hours of walking and standing.

  1. Minimal

Little or no walking. You can stay in the car, or step out for short walks on fairly level ground.

  2. Easy

Fairly level walking on paved paths or well-kept dirt roads. Many of these spots are wheelchair accessible.

  3. Moderate

Some ups and downs: stairs, sloped grass, rolling hills, open fields, or groomed trails with the odd root or rock.

  4. Strenuous

Rocky or uneven ground, more than 500 feet of climbing, and some walking off the trail.

Not sure a trip is right for you? Ask the trip leader. They know the route well and are glad to talk it through.
